How to practise Korean pronunciation
Learn how to use syllable audio, natural word recordings, pronunciation hints, and slow playback to practise Korean sounds.
Listen to the whole word first
Use Listen to hear the complete word. Repeat it at normal speed, then use 0.7× playback if you need more time to notice the sounds. Slow playback changes the speed of the same recording; it is not a different pronunciation.
Use syllable taps to focus on a sound
Tap a Korean syllable or its reading hint to hear a separately spoken syllable. These recordings are independent utterances, not pieces cut from the word. They help isolate a sound, but do not replace hearing how the whole word flows.
Reading hints are approximate
Hints such as goh-yahng-ee are an English-friendly starting point, not an exact description of Korean sounds. English accents differ, and some Korean sounds do not have an English equivalent. Follow the recording and gradually connect the sounds to Hangul.
Spelling and pronunciation can differ
Korean sounds can change when consonants meet. For example, 국물 is written with ㄱ and ㅁ but pronounced 궁물. The reading hints follow pronunciation; the Korean letters preserve the word’s spelling.
Compare hints with standard romanization
Open Standard spelling on a word page to see Revised Romanization, the standardized written transliteration used on maps and signs. It can look different from the pronunciation hints because the two serve different purposes.
